‘I’ve never done anything the normal way’ – Jamie Vardy becomes co-owner of US team Rochester Rhinos

“I like to keep myself busy, don’t I?” Jamie Vardy says, laughing, as he picks up on the surprise at the other end of the telephone. Vardy has just revealed to The Athletic that he has signed an agreement to become a co-owner of the Rochester Rhinos, who are based in New York State, more than 3,400 miles from his home in Lincolnshire, and last played a match in 2017.

It is the sort of news that takes a little while to digest but Vardy, who describes his stake as “a meaningful enough share to have a seat at the table”, is in full flow. “It’s really exciting,” he continues. “It’s going to be a lot different to what I’ve been used to for the last 10 years. But I’m looking forward to getting stuck into it. “I think it kind of resonates with me because of what they’ve achieved in the past — the only lower-league club to win the US Open Cup, the only team to have ever done it who’s outside MLS (Major League Soccer). It’s all about bringing that back and trying to replicate it — but we also want to bring it back even better than it was before.”
